Quick Fix

Are You Having Orthodontic Issues? Check Out These Quick Tips!

Our goal is to make your orthodontic treatment as seamless as possible, but we understand that some mishaps may occur from time to time. There are very few orthodontic emergencies, and most problems can be resolved at home.

However, if you have a situation that you cannot resolve on your own, call us as soon as possible so we can schedule a repair appointment.

In the meantime, check out our tips below to see what you can do should any issues occur.

Alleviate Your Sore Teeth

General soreness can occur after getting your braces or an adjustment. Over-the-counter acetaminophens like Tylenol or other non-aspirin pain relievers can help provide comfort. A warm washcloth, heating pad, or warm salt water rinses may also reduce the soreness in your jaws.

Lessen Wire Irritation

If your braces irritate an area, try moving the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or eraser. If the wire does not move, try covering the end with a small piece of cotton or a small amount of wax. Be sure to dry off the wire before placing the wax; this will allow it to stick to the surface better.

If the wire becomes painful, you can cut it with nail clippers or scissors that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol.

Loose Bracket

If the primary wire or a bracket comes loose, call our office to see if the bracket needs to be re-fitted. If you have a situation where you must cut the wire or slide a bracket off the wire, you may use fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol.

Please call our office the next business day to schedule a repair appointment!

Lost Separator

If a separator comes out, please call our office to see if it needs to be replaced. Some patients may lose a separator during treatment, which is common. We will be sure to replace separators if required.
